Navigating PCS Moves: A Guide for Service Members and Veterans

Happy Veterans Day to all our brave service members and veterans! 🇺🇸 As a REALTOR® and Certified Military Relocation Professional, I want to share some valuable insights and resources to help make your Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move as smooth as possible.

Understanding PCS Moves

A PCS move is a significant part of military life, with over 400,000 service members relocating each year. Whether you're moving within the continental U.S. (CONUS) or outside the continental U.S. (OCONUS), it's essential to be well-prepared.

Resources for a Smooth Move

  1. Military OneSource: This comprehensive resource offers personalized support, moving tips, and tools like Plan My Move, which helps you create customized checklists for your move. They also provide information on housing, schools, and local services at your new duty station1.
  2. Relocation Assistance Programs: Your installation's Military and Family Support Center offers relocation assistance services, including pre-departure briefings, newcomer orientations, and personalized support. They can help you with everything from moving your personal property to finding housing and employment opportunities for your family2.
  3. Plan My Move: This online tool allows you to create and manage your PCS through customized checklists, ensuring you don't miss any important steps. It covers everything from arranging personal property shipments to securing new housing and preparing your children for the move3.
  4. Personally Procured Moves (PPM): If you prefer to handle your move yourself, PPMs offer flexibility but also require careful planning and responsibility. Make sure to understand the rules and regulations to avoid any surprises.

Tips for a Successful PCS Move

  • Start Early: Begin planning your move as soon as you receive your PCS orders. The earlier you start, the more time you'll have to address any potential challenges.
  • Create a PCS Binder: Keep all your important documents, orders, and checklists in one place for easy access.
  • Use Your Per Diem Wisely: If you're eligible for per diem, use it to cover your travel and living expenses during the move.
  • Connect with a Sponsor: If moving OCONUS, request a military sponsor to help you navigate your new duty station.
  • Prepare Your Family: Moving can be challenging for children, so make sure to involve them in the process and provide support as needed.

Gratitude to Our Veterans

To all our veterans, thank you for your service and sacrifice. Your dedication and bravery are the foundation of our nation's strength. As you transition back to civilian life, know that there are resources and support available to help you navigate this new chapter.
